Setting a Curved Sidewalk
A gravel base, expansion joints, a slight curve, and a slope to manage a transition from the driveway to the height desired at the stairs.

We've since returned to do parging for this client. The nearly 200 s.f of walkways and concrete stairs are in fine shape, safer than their old patio stone walkway.

Coloured Concrete
This central walkway leads up to and around the front of the house where a new masonry planter box was formed. The path continues, descending 8' along the side of the house, where it finally meets three adjoining, rounded, patios behind the house - one patio set for a hot tub. A shed base was set in a corner. Barely visible in the photo, on the left, is the expansion of the driveway.

1300 sq. ft. of salmon-coloured concrete, with fibre strand, steel mesh and rebar reinforcements. 18 tons of earth was excavated..

Custom Countertops, Tables

A rainbow of colours in virtually any shape you want.

Polished to a high finish, or left a little rustic.

Inset stone as accents, like a square of granite, or a sprinkle of crushed marble.

Environmentally friendly. Indoor and outdoor uses.

Made off-site and carefully cured indoors in a temperature-controlled environment, with locally available dye pigment, with a fine polish.

Custom Table Top.
Made of white portland, white silica sand, buff-coloured dye, with a slate tile inset.

Metal re-inforcing bars are set inside.
The concrete was slowly cured with wet towels.
The rustic look of this top comes from not highly polishing the finish.

The top could be sanded, slurried, and finely polished later.
A different colour slurry could be used to add hints of another colour.

A Custom Chocolate Brown Cap Stone.
Slowly cured off-site for four weeks, made of white portland, with metal reinforcing inside.

The former wall of bricks had a brick top layer.
The brick joints in the top layer eroded, causing damage in the wall.
We repaired the brickwork and made a custom cap, tinted brown to match the house.

Concrete Staining for Colour.
After a good cleaning, a first coat of a light colour is applied everywhere, using an acid-stain.

A second layer, with darker tones of red and brown, was 'unevenly' applied over this one.

Repairing Concrete.
The adjacent retaining wall had cracked off the corner of the stair. 4" rebar pins and concrete, surface brushed and edged, and parged.

More Custom Shapes, Colours
Forming a set of custom-sized blocks, for insertion into a wall, in this case using both white cement and white sand.

Removing Concrete.
A sidewalk's base eroded, the concrete cracked and it sunk. Unfortunately the gas line is set into the concrete.

Tools of the trade:
A wet-dry, diamond-bladed, gas-powered, saw.
An electric sledge hammer and a rotary demolition hammer.
Manual sledge hammer, with a year-round exercise program.
Safety glasses, ear protection, filter-masks, gloves.
Tarps and canvas drop-sheets.

From Old to New.
In this century old home in the Glebe, a 8" thick concrete walkway was removed.

The new walkway, nearly as thick, is wider with flared ends. Rebar, steel mesh, fibre-strand, and modern concrete - it should be ready for the next 100 years.

Leveling a Basement Floor. Tarps Slow the Curing.
The tarps are soaked with water to slow the curing process, covering 150 square feet.

The old floor was off by four inches in one corner. The floor's surface was roughened, cleaned and a priming glue was used. Portland cement with 1/2" gravel filled the deeper sections, with a sand mix transitioning to a highly-adhesive cement for the thinnest edges. This floor will have a new floor built on top.

The client reported no cracking after the first ten days.

Wall Parge and Basement Floor
We removed 30 square feet of concrete floor, dug deeper, and with wire mesh and rebar, set a new floor. The concrete was set on tamped dry soil, with S Type cement.
Wet cloth dropsheets during the first two days slowed the initial cure period for a stronger floor.

Acid washes followed by amonia and water washes, can affect additional effects.

We used the rough side of cement board as a base for some of the parging, while some was mounted on galvanized wire lathe.

Parging, one of my Favs
The client is very pleased.

The diving platform provides varieties of edges to parge: Inside and outside edges, right and obtuse angles, rounded and sharp edges.
